Can Google + Boost My Personal Brand?

There are so many social media sites out there these days that it’s impossible to have a profile for all of them. Most of us can hardly even manage our Facebook. But there is one site that you need to include in your social media repertoire: Google +. You may think Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn cover all of the bases, but the truth is that if you don’t have Google+, you’re missing out on a lot more than you think.

By simply having a Google+ account, you can boost your personal brand. It’s a great asset to your social life, but an even better tool for your professional career.

1) First and foremost, having a Google+ account makes you more searchable. When someone searches your name, your profile will appear in the results. This is an opportunity for you to use your profile as a showcase for your professional interests, talents, and personality. Take advantage!

2) Google+ immerses you in information from the industry of your choice. While creating your profile, be sure to “circle” industries that you are most interested in. For example, I would choose “public relations” and “communications.” This feature allows you to see content from the top professionals in your industry and keep you up-to-date on the latest trends. As you should do with all of your social media sites, stick to two or three topics related to your career as to not bombard yourself with unnecessary info. For example, you may consider yourself a ‘foodie.’  But do you need the latest recipe from BBQ ribs from Bobby Flay on your feed? I didn’t think so. Stick to the essentials.

By having this flow of information allows users to see what your interested in. It also gives you a stream of information and knowledge, making you and your brand more valuable.

3) Google+ is more comprehensive and personal than any other social media site out there. It is simple to use, and simple to organize your lists or “circles.” Instead of having a personal and professional Facebook and Twitter, you can have all of your connections of any kind on one site. This way, professionals you’re connected with on Facebook won’t see that you’re out with your drinking buddies on a Tuesday night. Professional image = saved.

Ten minuets is all it takes to make you and your personal brand more searchable on Google. Go for it and make a profile! <
